INTRODUCTION

Inspiration:
I am inspired to write this book based on my childhood experiences in an environment where skin bleaching was considered the ideal way to enhance one’s appearance. Growing up, I was surrounded by the belief that lightening one’s skin to a medium or total fair complexion was essential for boosting confidence.

Observation:
When I attempted to conform to the trend, I discovered that the products others used caused a painful burning sensation on my skin. Despite having a naturally medium fair complexion due to my family’s genetics – with most of my cousins being fair-skinned and relatives from both my father’s and mother’s sides having fair complexions – I found that my skin was sensitive to the products I tried. I experimented with various soaps and creams in an effort to lighten my skin, but the burning sensation prevented me from getting a good night’s sleep. Eventually, I resorted to using tube cream on my face and neck, as it was the only product that didn’t cause a burning sensation on my face, although it still irritated my body.

As I observed others who had become whiter and fairer than me, I couldn’t help but feel self-conscious. This led me to research what would work best for my skin and why I couldn’t subject my skin to the same treatments as others.

My Findings:
I discovered that everyone has different skin types and individual skin sensitivity thresholds. My own skin normal and sensitive, which means it needs to be handled with care and cannot follow the same path as others.

However, I didn’t pay much attention to the potential consequences of using the tube cream or its long-term effects until I began experiencing pain. This time, it wasn’t just a burning sensation but actual pain and itching that initially started with tingling. By then, I had been using various tube creams on my face and neck for over 14 years.

Around the same time, I observed many people I knew using hot tube gel and different bleaching shampoos/soaps on their skin, then exposing their skin to direct sunlight. Their skin’s elasticity had been significantly compromised, with some suffering burns beyond recognition. I couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened to me if my skin hadn’t naturally rejected those harsh products.

While abroad about 17-18 years ago, I had the opportunity to attend an Esthetics School, where many of my questions were answered and I gained valuable knowledge beyond what I had researched on my own. Upon returning home, I started a skincare business with the goal of offering products suitable for all skin types and raising awareness about proper skin care practices. To my surprise, most clients solely wanted to lighten their skin, despite my efforts to educate them on the potential consequences of bleaching.

I expanded my business by training individuals interested in the field, teaching them about skin types and care, facial and body treatments, pedicure/manicure techniques, and various products. I focused particularly on skin rejuvenation, assisting those facing the long-term effects of chemical usage. Soon, I became a trusted resource for skin repair, leading me to realize that this was my true calling.

Sophia’s Enterprneur Journey :From Nigeria to US,
From Skin Affairs to Sophiasbeautyworld.

After relocating to the US six years ago, I closed my skincare business in Nigeria and started anew. Many of my previous customers, particularly those who had undergone skin revival treatments, continued to support me. Recognizing the need for further education, I enrolled in an Esthetic school in 2023.

Before beginning my studies, I launched my skincare products, “Sophia’s Beauty World,” online through Veepar and @sophiasbeautyworldusa on Instagram. Prior to this, I completed online training with Zestchest Institute, earning certificates in perfume, body cream, lotion, and soap making. Through a collaboration with Nicole Global Signature Scent, we created Sophia fragrances.

My primary goal has always been to provide individuals with skincare products tailored to their specific skin types. I consistently emphasize my passion for becoming a skilled formulator whenever I introduce myself. Graduating from school in September 2024 was a dream come true.

While attending school, I continued to expand my knowledge through online classes and obtained certifications in formulating various skincare products, including cleansers, toners, soaps, face and body oils, and creams.
